Landscape Tips for Homeowners
Published: June 26, 2025
Summer is just around the corner, and with the heat rising, it’s the perfect time to give our yards a little extra attention! A few simple steps can help your lawn stay healthy and beautiful—and keep our community looking its best.
Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:
• Water wisely: Set your sprinklers to run early in the morning (2:00am-4:00am is optimal) to help the water soak in and avoid evaporation. If you need help with your sprinkler system, the City of Carrollton offers a free sprinkler diagnostic. They will not repair your system, but this can help identify any issues before calling a professional.
• Mow smart: Keep your lawnmower blade a bit higher during summer. Taller grass helps protect roots from the sun and keeps your lawn greener. You should fertilize your lawn at least twice a year and most professionals recommend at least 4 times a year.
• Protect your foundation: A drip line around your home’s foundation can prevent soil from drying out and pulling away. At a minimum, you should water your foundation weekly.
• Manage standing water: If you notice pooling water, installing a French drain can help redirect it and prevent soggy spots. This will also help prevent fungus and mold that will kill your grass and make it virtually impossible to regrow.
• Trim trees thoughtfully: Allowing more sunlight to reach your lawn can help reduce bare patches. This also promotes healthy strong tree roots that are less likely to snap during weather events.
• Cover exposed roots: Add fresh soil around tree roots to prevent erosion and promote healthier growth.
• Tidy shrubs and hedges: Regular trimming keeps everything looking neat and inviting. It also strengthens your hedges and helps prevent disease or total loss during hard freezes and high temperatures.
• Mulch flower beds: Add landscape fabric and mulch to keep weeds down to enhance your curb appeal and helps retain moisture during the hot months and protection during winter freezes.
